One of the most common concerns we see at Hope Clinic is period problems—especially cramps and heavy bleeding (menorrhagia). In typical medical care, birth control is often prescribed. There are a couple of concerns: it can increase the risk of strokes and cancers, and it doesn’t address what’s causing the problem.

What Dr. Brad considers:
There may be a low-grade thyroid deficiency that regular lab tests may not detect. From a Chinese medicine perspective, we also consider spleen energy, which plays a crucial role in how well your body produces and circulates blood. Among young female athletes, we often see a condition known as liver blood deficiency, which means the body is not producing enough blood to support both the demands of training and a healthy menstrual cycle. If you’re dealing with painful periods or heavy flow, there are other ways to get help.
