We hear a lot about vitamins and minerals, but what about enzymes?
Enzymes are like tiny superheroes working behind the scenes in our bodies. They’re the catalysts that power every function, from breaking down food for nutrient absorption to removing waste and producing energy. They even battle cellular aging and play a role in fighting off cancer cells. For instance, enzymes can eat away at a thick coating called fibrin that cancer cells use as a shield. Once this protective layer is gone, the immune system can swoop in and help destroy the cancer cells.
As we age, our enzyme production tends to decline. By age 45, our enzyme levels might be about 30% lower than in our teenage years, and by 75, we might have up to 60% less.
But here’s the good news: we can boost our enzyme levels by eating enzyme-rich foods! Some excellent sources include fermented foods like sauerkraut, fresh fruits and vegetables, sprouts, apple cider vinegar, raw honey, and bee pollen.
Try adding an enzyme-rich food to each meal. For example, I love pairing wild-caught salmon with my version of mango chutney. It tastes amazing, and I know the enzymes in the chutney are helping to break down the protein.
2-3 chopped mangoes
2/3 cup cilantro leaves
1 cup chopped red onion
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1 tablespoon raw honey
Dash or two of red pepper flakes
Who knew that a side of chutney could do so much? Serve it as a topping or on the side as a garnish!
